Jmf ntcKcom ^ukG univcusity mc6ic&.l CGtitc.R VOLUME 19, NUMBER 40 October 13, 1972 DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA Auto Registration Begins Monday University-wide re-registration of .iiy motor vehicles, which will include a $10 fee for each vehicle registered, begins Monday. A special registration desk will be set up in the hospital for the convenience of medical center personnel and students. The procedure to follow, an explanation of who may use the hospital registration desk and an explanation of the fee is printed below under "Registration Procedure." This re-registration of vehicles was to have been conducted in late August, but a delay in obtaining decals required its postponement until now. Under Duke University's Parking and Traffic Regulations, all motor vehicles operated on campus, including the medical center campus, by full-time or part-time students, staff, employes or faculty must be registered with the University Public Safety Department. All current parking decals will become invalid after Oct. 31, so vehicles must be registered by that time or the owner will face the possibility of his vehicle's being towed. Under the new regulations, the entire campus will be divided into parking zones and only vehicles bearing appropriate decals will be permitted to park in those designated zones. The zone system is an attempt on the part of the university to distribute cars more evenly throughout the campus near places of the owner's work or residence and to more nearly assure a convenient parking space for all registered vehicles. (A campus map showing the different parking zones will be published in next week's Intercom.) REGISTRA TION PROCEDURE A special registration desk for medical center personnel and students (excluding those at Hanes House and the School of Nursing) will be set up in the basement corridor outside Medical Records, near the intersection of the Yellow and Red zones. The desk will be manned Monday, Oct. 16, through Friday, Oct. 20, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and from 7 p.m.-l a.m. After next Friday vehicles of medical center personnel can be registered in Room 304, Bell Building, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday. A registration fee of $10 will be charged for each vehicle, with a limit of two vehicles per person. The fee for motorcycles is $5. The fee will cover the period through Sept. 1, 1973. For persons who now pay to park (such as on Flowers Drive or in the gated lot behind Bell Building), the registration fee is incorporated in the parking fee. However, if a second vehicle is to be registered by pay parkers, the $10 registration fee will be charged. Persons who may use the special registration desk in the hospital are personnel who work in the medical center and hospital. Research Park, the Medical Sciences buildings, the Bell Building, the Graduate Center, Pickens Rehabilitation Building, the Child Guidance Clinic and the Civitan Building. For students and personnel at Hanes House and the School of Nursing, registration will be conducted at Hanes House next Thursday and Friday, Oct. 19 and 20, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. The following information and documents will be required to register, and a vehicle cannot be registered without all necessary information: Valid driver's license, current vehicle registration card, name of automobile insurance company. Social Security number, and the building, room number and phone number of your principal location of work or residence. Questions about the parking and (continued on page 3)
